Coordinates
Coordinates are a pair of numbers which are used to determine the position of a point or a shape in a 2-dimensional plane.
We define the position of a point on a 2D plane using two numbers, called the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate.
Coordinates are written as ordered pairs of numbersor using letters and numbers.
The first coordinate refers to the x- axes and the second coordinate refers to the y- axes:
(x; y) or A (x; y)
Example: (-2, 3) or A(-2, 3)
Coordinate plane
The coordinate plane is divided into four sections, called quadrants.
Quadrants are named I, II, III and IV, numbered in an anti-clockwise direction.
The x- axes is horizontal and the y- axes is vertical
Quadrant I has positive x and y values
Quadrant II has negative x and positive y
Quadrant III has negative x and y
Quadrant IV has positive x and negative y
Coordinate
The first coordinate is called the abscissa, is the horizontal position according to the x-axes.
The second coordinate is called the ordinate, is the vertical position according to the y-axes.
