Least common multiple
The “least common multiple” (LCM) refers to the smallest positive integer that is a multiple of two or more given numbers. In simpler terms, it’s the smallest number that all the given numbers can divide evenly into.
Here are some examples of finding the least common multiple (LCM):
Example 1: LCM of 6 and 8
- Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30,…
- Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40,…
- The LCM is 24, as it is the smallest number both 6 and 8 divide into evenly.
Example 2: LCM of 5 and 12
- Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30,…
- Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60,…
- The LCM is 60, as it is the smallest number both 5 and 12 divide into evenly.
