Rounding – <\/span>Approximate<\/span><\/h1>\n

Rounding\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> off means replacing a number with an approximate value.<\/p>\n

Example:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A route takes 56 minutes to be covered, thus, it can be considered \u00aba one-hour journey\u00bb.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To estimate a number, amount or total, often rounding it off to the nearest 10 or 100.<\/p>\n

Rounding Rules<\/strong><\/span>
more than 5 > up<\/strong>
less than 5 < down<\/strong><\/p>\n

For decimal fractions<\/span><\/strong>
<\/span><\/span>1. Look at the digit in the place value to be rounded to.
2. Increase it by 1 if the digit to the right of it is 5 or more.
3. Leave it the same if the digit to the right of it is less than 5.
4. Remove everything to the right of the digit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Example:<\/strong><\/span>
Round 1634.286 to 1 decimal place:\u00a0 \u00a0 1634.286 \u2248 1634.3<\/p>\n

When rounding to 10 or above <\/strong><\/span>there’s an important change to step 4.
<\/span><\/span>4. Replace whole numbers to the right of the digit with zero(s), then remove everything to their right.<\/span><\/p>\n

Round 1634.286 to 10
<\/span> 1634.286 \u2248 1630<\/span>
Round 1634.286 to 100
1634.286 \u2248 1600<\/span>
<\/span>Round 1634.286 to 1000
