Percent, percentage

Percent means «for every 100 parts«.

The word comes from the latin phrase per centum which means per one hundred.

Percentage means a part per hundred. It can be expressed in decimal form and in fraction form too.

A percentage of a number is symbolized by writing:

the number and the word «percent» after it

the number and the percent symbol %

Examples: If we say 30%, it means 30 out of 100. So, 30% is equivalent to 0.3 in decimal form, or the fraction 30/100.

Percent tells you a ratio «out of 100»

The formula to calculate percentage is:

percentage = (value/total value) x 100
