Equation
An equation is a mathematical formula containing an equals sign, to show that two expressions are equal.
The word equation and its cognates in other languages may have subtly different meanings;
for example, in French, in Estonian etc an equation is defined as containing one or more variables.
In English, any well-formed formula consisting of two expressions related with an equals sign is an equation.
Examples:
- 3 + 6 = 9
- x + 6 = 9
- 4x = 12
- x2 + 2x – 3 = 0
Solving the simple equation
x + a = bx = b – a | x – a = bx= b + a | a – x = bx = a – b |
Examples: |
x + 2 = 8x = 8 – 2
x = 6 |
x – 2 = 6x= 6 + 2
x = 8 |
8 – x = 6x = 8 – 6
x = 2 |
x * a = bx = b : a | x : a = bx= b * a | a : x = bx = a : b |
Examples: |
x * 2 = 8x = 8 : 2
x = 4 |
x : 2 = 6x= 6 * 2
x = 12 |
48 : x = 6x = 48 : 6
x = 8 |
