Division and Remainders

Sometimes when dividing there is something left over. It is called the remainder.

Example 1:

There are 9 candies to share with two children.

9 cannot be divided exactly into 2 groups, each child gets 4 candies, and there is 1 left over.

«9 divided by 2 equals 4 with a remainder of 1«

As a Fraction

It is also possible to cut the remaining candy in half, so each child gets 4 ½ candies:

9 : 2 = 4 R 1 = 4 ½

«9 divided by 2 equals 4 remainder 1 equals 4 and a half«

Example 2:

23 : 4 = 5 R 3 = 5 3/4    and  23 = 45 + 3

29 : 3 = 9 R 2 = 9 2/3      and  29 = 39 + 2
