Equation

An equation is a mathematical formula containing an equals sign, to show that two expressions are equal.

The word equation and its cognates in other languages may have subtly different meanings;

for example, in French, in Estonian etc an equation is defined as containing one or more variables.

In English, any well-formed formula consisting of two expressions related with an equals sign is an equation.

Examples:

  • 3 + 6 = 9
  • x + 6 = 9
  • 4x = 12
  • x2 + 2x – 3 = 0
Solving the simple equation
x + a = bx = b – a x – a = bx= b + a a – x = bx = a – b

Examples:
x + 2 = 8x = 8 – 2x = 6 x – 2 = 6x= 6 + 2x = 8 8 – x = 6x = 8 – 6x = 2

x *  a = bx = b : a x : a = bx= b * a a : x = bx = a : b
Examples:
x * 2 = 8x = 8 : 2x = 4 x : 2 = 6x= 6 * 2x = 12 48 : x = 6x = 48 : 6x = 8
