# Coordinate plane

**A coordinate plane (Cartesian plane) **is a

**plane**formed by a

**horizontal line**(an axis) and a

**vertical line**(another axis) that intersect at a point called the

**origin.**

A plane containing two perpendicular **axis (x and y) **intersecting at a point called the **origin (0,0).**

A **point** position is denoted using pairs of coordinates (x; y) , **e.g. A(3, 1).**

##### The coordinate plane is divided into **four sections**, called quadrants.

Quadrants are named **I, II, III** and **IV**, numbered in an **anti-clockwise direction**.

**Quadrant I** has positive x and y values**Quadrant II** has negative x and positive y**Quadrant III** has negative x and y**Quadrant IV** has positive x and negative y
